HISTORY "No telephone, no television... no worries!" Prior to 1930 the whole of Long Island was included in a single Special Lease. Following the death of the original owner the island was subdivided into three sections, which were subsequently sold. The central section was purchased and after some time the original holiday resort was carved out of virgin bush and named "Clear View Gardens". This consisted of a row of huts and amenities buildings just beyond the beach facing the Sound. The owner's residence was located at the southern end of the beach with a small pawpaw plantation on the hillside above. In 1941 Long Island was gazetted as National Park and a new lease issued. The property changed hands twice under this Lease until it was allowed to expire in February 1949. On October 31 1949 "Clear View Gardens" was acquired by the Brooks family and renamed "Palm Bay". In 1950 a new lease was created and in accordance with Government policy at the time the original area was reduced to a plot of 16 acres with the balance reverting to National Park. It was during their tenancy that the Brooks built additional huts on the Whitsunday Passage side of the isthmus behind Palm Bay, but these are no longer in existence. They upgraded the original huts and various other improvements. Over the following years the property changed hands a couple of times and in the process the original Special Lease altered and subject area reduced yet again. One of the current principals acquired the property in 1988 and over the ensuing years a continual upgrade of facilities has occurred. The existing ownership now has an envied position in the market place and won many Tourism Awards. With the new perpetual lease; which has the same level of security as freehold. The future of the resort is now assured. Whitsunday Profile Palm Bay Home or Premium Homes. |
